Flowering time July - August
Planting time March - April
Mid-early Potato planting time:
Mid early bernice potatoes are planted from mid-March to mid-April. Planting distance: 60 cm x 40 cm and 15 cm deep. When the first plants emerge, cover them immediately with soil to prevent night frost (earthing). Never plant potatoes 2 years in a row in the same place.
Pre-germinate early Potatoes:
To achieve a high yield early, healthy tubers of an early variety can be pre-germinated and planted from mid-April. Pre-germination starts about three weeks before planting, in, for example, flat (fruit) boxes. One leaves them in a bright place at about 10 Celsius.
Fertilisation:
Preferably use an organic fertiliser. Be careful not to give too much nitrogen, the foliage will grow too lush. Potassium is very important for growing healthy bernice potatoes.
Harvesting:
Bernice potatoes can be harvested when the tubers have reached a sufficient size. The foliage need not have died yet.
Storage:
Bernice potatoes have a short growing period and cannot be stored for long. Store the potatoes in a dark, cool, dry place.
