Barenbrug Horse Master (15 kg)
An excellent grass seed blend, specially selected grass seed for hay land, up to 600m2.
A healthy horse pasture
Grass is the most important component in a horse's ration. In the summer months, most horses graze in pasture most of the day, in winter they get mainly hay or silage. Horse Master is a grass seed mixture specifically formulated to the needs of horses. With a Horse Master pasture, you can be sure you have the best grass for your horse.
Hoof and muscle disorders in relation to grass
Lameness and laminitis are diseases resulting from incorrect nutrition. In particular, the fructan content of grass plays an important role in this. Grass naturally produces fructan (sugar) especially during periods with cold nights and lots of sunshine. But also in stressful situations such as under-fertilisation or too short grazing, a grass plant will produce fructan.
Barenbrug has done a lot of research into the fructan (sugar) content in different grasses. The fructan content in different grasses can vary considerably. The varieties in Horse Master are selected for low fructan content and contain as much as 50% less fructan than standard pasture grass suitable for cows. Horses that graze and get a Horse Master pasture or forage from a Horse Master pasture have a much lower risk of hoof or muscleitis.
Grazing behaviour horses require specific grass
Horses graze the grass with their teeth very close to the root. Cows eat with their tongues and graze the grass much higher up. The specific grazing behaviour of horses requires a firm sward with a low growth point. Strong rooting of the grass is important to prevent horses from pulling out the entire grass plant. Because horses graze the grass so short, the grass struggles to regrow properly, creating bare patches. Horses that ingest too much sand while grazing (in a pasture with many bald patches) have an increased risk of sand colic.
Horse Master forms a strong turf consisting exclusively of low-growing grasses. The strong sod prevents horses from pulling out the whole plant while grazing, the low growing point ensures fast regrowth of the grass. An additional advantage is that weeds have virtually no chance to develop in a Horse Master meadow.
High-textured grass
Your horse's intestines and stomach work better with a ration rich in structure. That is why Horse Master is composed of breeds that produce roughage with sufficient structure. This also contributes to your horse's health. As hay, these unique properties of Horse Master naturally remain intact, so there is a big difference in quality between hay from a Horse Master pasture and hay from any other pasture.
Firm turf
Horse Master's firm sod prevents injuries during a sprint in the meadow. The varieties in Horse Master form a strong turf that resists treading.
Moreover, a Horse Master meadow recovers quickly after heavy use.
