The hole plant is one of the most famous houseplants, but few people grow a hole plant from a seed. However, it is interesting to do so. Not only because it's fun to watch a hole plant develop from scratch, but also because the seedlings grow towards darkness instead of light until they find something to climb up. In nature, that's a tree and in the living room it's often a wall or other plant. Originally, the hole plant grows in the rainforests of Central America as an epiphyte in trees. There, the plant climbs along tree branches to a size of sometimes up to 9 metres, with aerial roots reaching the soil to absorb nutrients. The young leaves do not yet have holes, but older leaves develop a beautiful pattern. It is not entirely clear why holes appear in the leaves, but scientific research in 2013 cites light absorption as the reason. With holes, a larger surface area can be achieved with the same amount of tissue (and thus energy). And with a larger surface area, there is a greater chance of catching a ray of sunlight in a dark rainforest. Other explanations include being able to withstand strong winds (a hurricane, for example), that water with holes reaches the roots more easily or that insects do not lay eggs on leaves that appear to be affected. Further research is needed to really answer this.
So the hole plant is a shade plant and cannot tolerate direct sunlight. The plant can flower with a white inflorescence followed by fruits that take about a year to ripen. Unripe, they are poisonous, but ripe fruits are yellow and resemble pineapples in texture and taste. It is an easy plant, where it is important to let the soil dry out between watering. Spraying the leaves and roots with water is also good for growth.

Sowing description:Seeds have a short shelf life so sow them soon after receipt. This can be done without pretreatment in sowing soil. Keep the soil constantly slightly moist and the temperature above 20grC. Germination usually after a few weeks
