This bird of paradise flower has rush-like leaves (1-2m), distinguishing it from the better-known variety with banana-like leaves. The flowers also have a redder accent than the common variety. The flowers are pollinated by birds and appear most numerous when the plant is kept in a tight pot in a sunny spot. The plant does not need much water and can withstand temperatures down to -5°C.

Sowing description: First remove the orange fluff from the seeds. Then soak seeds 24-48 hours in lukewarm water and sow in sowing soil. Keep soil constantly moist, cover with cling film or glass and allow to germinate in a warm place in the house. Germination can take several months.
