Echinacea purpurea is also called 'Sun Hat'. Echinacea purpurea develops striking flowers in summer. They stand out for their size and colours: a combination of an orange-brown heart surrounded by contrasting pink petals. Even when the flower has finished blooming and the pink petals hang down discoloured, this flower still has ornamental value. An added attraction is that during flowering it is a coming and going of countless bumblebees and butterflies. Echinacea is suitable for sunny spots and fertile soil that is not too wet. Give this plant a layer of 3 to 4 centimetres of compost every autumn so that it does not have to fight too hard with other species for nutrients.
