Butterfly Bushes - Buddleja Blue - Buy 3 Plants?
The plant is native to China and Japan. The genus name Buddleja is derived from the English botanist Adam Buddle. The species designation davidii refers to its discoverer, Father Armand David.
The Butterfly bush, also known as Buddleja, is a real magnet for butterflies, bees and bumblebees. Among others, cabbage white, lemon butterfly, atalanta will descend on your bush (if they are nearby). The sunnier your shrub is, the more nectar, the more buzzing activity around your shrub. Buddleja Davidii is well hardy, can withstand very hard frosts. Is not evergreen: in autumn/winter the butterfly bush loses its leaves, but sprouts again in spring.
Once well-rooted, butterfly bushes are undemanding. In dry, hot periods you would do well to water well. In winter, the Buddleja does not want to be very wet; choose a spot where no puddles remain in winter.
If you have this Buddleja in a pot, keep the soil slightly moist: in sunny spots, water can evaporate very quickly in summer (also via the plant). In autumn and winter, the challenge in pots is not to keep the butterfly bush too wet. Make sure that too much water can escape, and if you have a canopy, use it to prevent any winter rain from entering the pot.
Buddleja Davidii (Butterfly bush) wants a nice sunny spot. Half-sun is also possible, but the more sun, the more nectar and thus the more butterflies, bees and bumblebees.
Blooms between June and October. Buddleja davidii only flowers on 1-year-old wood, so pruning is necessary. To stimulate second flowering in the year, cut spent flowers immediately. After a good three weeks, new flower buds will appear again. From the end of August onwards, leave the spent flowers in place so that the shrub will have spent flowers well into autumn: looks nice too! And little critters are happy.
Pruning is important for butterfly bushes. Buddleja davidii flowers on 1-year-old wood. This means that the butterfly bush should be pruned in spring after its first winter. Do so in April, when the frost has passed but the sap streams are not yet pumping through the plant in full. Prune the dwarf shrub back to 25cm above the ground.
The shrub will sprout again and flowers will appear on the young wood. If you don't prune, you will soon have fewer blooms in your bush.
