Growing legumes

There are different types of legumes, such as green beans, peas, broad beans and capuchins. All legumes require a sunny location, and it varies from species to species which soil is most suitable. For peas and mangetout, a light, slightly clayey permeable soil is ideal, and broad beans are best grown in a nutrient-rich soil with a little fertiliser. Pods and peas grow upwards, so it is handy to use a piece of netting. This prevents the pods from lying on the ground and makes picking them easier.

Sowing pulses

Pulses are a real taste of the vegetable garden. It is very attractive to grow these crops yourself, as problems with diseases and pests are virtually non-existent. An early sowing around March or April gives the best results for capuchins, peas, pods. Doing this later in the year gives insufficient pod setting and problems with mildew. For beans, the best sowing time is slightly later, between May and July. Want to know more about the most favourable sowing time for green beans, runner beans and broad beans?
