Iris germanica or Bearded Iris
Iris germanica (Bearded Iris) is a spectacular, low-maintenance and colourful spring bloomer. Bearded irises are available in the most beautiful colours and most hybrids smell lovely too. Iris germanica is a popular bee and butterfly plant and also produces beautiful cut flowers. Iris germanica feels at home in a sunny spot in fertile, well-drained garden soil. Remove spent flowers after flowering and prune back wilted leaves in autumn. It is advisable to tear/divide and replant irises every three to four years. You can compost the inner, old part of the plant.
Iris Hollandica
Iris hollandica (Dutch iris) is smaller than Iris germanica, but equally spectacular. Dutch irises provide bright colour accents in the spring garden. With beautiful purple, topaz blue and soft pink coloured flowers with golden yellow accents. They are ideal cut flowers. Iris hollandica feels at home in a sunny to semi-shade spot in fertile, well-drained garden soil. Remove spent flowers after flowering and prune back wilted leaves in autumn.
