Planting calla bulbs - instructions
Well-drained soil
Calla bulbs grow into beautiful Arum calyces. Before planting Calla bulbs, it is important to prepare the soil properly. Adding mulch to the soil will help maintain a constant temperature, which helps keep the Calla stress-free. Mulch will also improve soil consistency and help retain moisture better. Callas thrive in well-drained, loose soil.
Calla care: Full sun!
Arum care involves the fact that the plant needs full sun. When choosing a planting spot, remember that a full-grown Calla plant grows between 1 and 3 metres tall and has a diameter of about 30 to 45cm. The tubers should be planted quite deep (about 10cm for best results).
Calla care - instructions
Let your Calla tubers dry in a well-ventilated room. After the tubers have hardened off and the soil has been prepared, they should be planted at a depth of about 5cm with the outgrowing leaves facing upwards. 30 to 45cm of growing space should be kept between the plants. After planting, water the tubers well. It is important to keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Depending on the variety, soil temperature and weather conditions, you can expect the Calla to start flowering within 60 to 90 days.
Good Calla care? Then you will enjoy your Calla again next year!
Once the leaves have withered, you can dig up the Calla bulbs and store them in a cool, dry place until spring. They can be divided prior to storage, as long as the individual parts are dried. This prevents the open wounds from rotting. Once all risk of frost has disappeared, the Calla bulbs can be replanted and fertilised.
