Well-drained soil
In the garden, the Begonia needs rich, porous, well-drained soil, as well as shelter from wind. Begonia should therefore be planted in soil where the moisture content in the soil is kept as even as possible. Fertilising the begonia monthly is necessary.
Water begonias between once a week and once every fortnight. Monitor the humidity of the potting soil, by sticking your finger into the soil and feeling whether it is still moist. If it is not, it is time to water the begonias. If the roots of the Begonia plant are standing in too much water, the begonias will deteriorate quickly, so never water too much.
Where should I plant the tuberous begonia?
Plant your Begonia bulbs 30cm apart in shade or semi-shade. They can be perfectly combined with ferns, which also tolerate shade.
Bulb begonia care instructions
Begonia should preferably be planted in small pots. Begonias have small root systems and do not need to be repotted often. It is advised to pull the tuber clod out of the pot every spring to see if the roots have grown all the way to the bottom of the pot. If so, the root ball will need a larger pot.
Remove spent flowers and withered leaves
Watch out for aphids and beetles, although these pests are more likely to cause problems for bedding plants than for plants in pots or containers. Keep Begonias in tip-top condition by removing all dead flowers and dried leaves. All in all, caring for Begonias is not a complicated process.
Planting tuberous begonias? Enjoy your Begonias again next year!
Tuberous begonias should be dug out, after which they should be watered immediately. During winter, they can be kept in shallow, open containers. If there is a risk of mice or other rodents, you can cover the containers with netting.
Our Begonia, like all our other products, come with detailed planting instructions.
