Dicentra spectabilis owes its Dutch name, gebroken hartje, to the shape of the flower. The broken heart flower is white with pinkish red and hangs in clusters. The leaves are grey-green and whitish underneath. The broken heart emerges in spring and then blooms from April to June and then retreats underground, so that by July you won't see anything. This is why it is important to fill the space that falls open with a plant that will develop late, such as gypsophila. Moist soil and a semi-shaded location are necessary. Dicentra spectabilis should also be sheltered, as the stems break off easily. It is important that the soil contains ample moisture, especially during the growing and flowering period.
