Bismarck Palm (Bismarckia Nobilis) - Buy 2 Seeds?
Family: Arecaceae
Latin name: Bismarckia nobilis
Dutch name: Bismarck palm
Origin: Madagascar
The Bismarck palm is a rare and very beautiful palm from northern and western Madagascar. The leaves are silver-blue in colour and grow as fans up to 3 metres wide. In the wild, the species reaches a height of sometimes up to 25 metres, but here, as a tub or houseplant, it stays small enough to be well cared for. The plant likes a sunny location and can withstand temperatures up to 3 degrees below freezing. The species is named after Otto von Bismarck, an acclaimed chancellor of the German empire from 1871 to 1890.
Sowing description: First soak the seeds in warm water (preferably 30grC) for 2 days, changing the water a few times. Then sow the seeds in a mixture of sowing soil and silver sand (1:1), pressing half the seed into the soil. Cover with cling film or glass and keep the soil constantly moist. In a warm place (at 30grC with soil heat, or near a heater) the seeds usually germinate after 6 to 8 weeks, possibly later.
Sowing time: All year round
Difficulty: Challenge
Minimum temperature: -3 degrees Celsius
