The red hanging begonias (Begonia pendula) are double-flowered. They look their best in pots and planters. They also do very well in hanging baskets. Hanging begonias flower all summer until frostThe tubers of hanging begonias can be planted in fresh potting soil in spring, after the last night frost. To do this, use a flower pot or planter with holes in the bottom so that the water can drain well. Cover the bottom with potsherds or a layer of hydro grains. Put the potting soil in the flower pot and place the begonia tuber on top. Cover the tuber with 1-2 cm of soil. Place the tubers about 30-50 cm apart. Water the begonia immediately after planting. Hanging begonias grow and flower well in the semi-shade, and by regularly cutting away spent begonia flowers, you can encourage repeat flowering. Protect begonias from bright sunlight. The soil around the tuber should not be too wet, as very wet soil can cause the begonia tuber to rot. Begonia tubers are very easy to overwinter. Cast off the plants after the first night frost. Shake the soil off the tuber and place the begonia in a box with peat moss or sharp sand. Store the begonia tubers in a frost-free place. Next spring, you can plant them again.
