Artichoke - Buy 3 Plants?

Artichoke has been cultivated and used as food for centuries. An unusual plant with beautiful flowers, it is mainly grown as an edible plant. In this case, as if the still-closed flower head of the plant is eaten as a vegetable. Artichoke is truly a delicacy, and delicious in flavour! Artichoke tastes mild and somewhat bitter. If you don't harvest the Artichoke before it sprouts, you won't be able to eat the vegetable. But then the 2nd use of this special vegetable comes up - in the ornamental garden!

Growing Artichoke as a flower

Purple Artichoke has also been grown as a flower for years. An English king is known to have had the Artichoke brought to his royal gardens as plants, to enjoy the purple flowers. A very nice thing about the Artichoke is that this plant is perennial. So you only need to sow or plant it once, and you can enjoy it for years. The advantage of planting rhizomes, as opposed to sowing, is that you can harvest faster and more in the first year. The plants are already more developed by then, and as with cuttings, the plant is ready to harvest earlier. Handy!

Purple Artichoke growing vegetable garden

This pack contains 1 Artichoke rhizome. You can plant this rhizome in May, June and July. Do wait until no more frost is declared. Water well after planting and then let nature do its work. In the first year, 1 or 2 Artichokes grow, the following years this number grows substantially. You can harvest the first Artichokes from as early as June. The flowers will bloom in July and August. Artichoke can grow considerably and reach 175 centimetres in height.
